WHAT TO PACK:
Pack lightly. There are very few occasions you will need to dress up for and most restaurants allow casual attire.
CLOTHING:
Spring, Summer, Fall travel: Shorts, T-shirts, light sundresses or summer slacks will get you into any restaurant. Don't forget your bathing suit, a cover-up, sandals and tennis shoes. In this tropical environment very little makeup is required and hair is best worn naturally in the light breezes. Bring along a light jacket if you plan boat trips. The air is always cooler when you're on the water.
Winter travel: In the daytime hours you'll be comfortable in the same attire recommended for summer travel. However, the nights may get a bit cooler. You will want slacks and a jacket or sweater once the sun goes down.
ACCESSORIES:
Binoculars
Camera (convert your regular camera to an underwater camera with a waterproof case)
Small waterproof fanny pack or swimwear with a closing pocket
Waterproof sunscreen (15 SPF or higher)
Sunglasses
Only carry the essentials while out enjoying the island. Do not leave valuables on your beach blanket or locked in your car. Theft happens even in paradise. It is best to leave your valuable items locked in your condo or carry them with you at all times.
HOW TO AVOID JET LAG
Set your watch to each new time zone as soon as your plane is in the air. Remember that Hawaii does not observe daylight savings time. During the spring months, when the clock is turned ahead, Hawaii is 6 hours behind EST, 3 hours behind PST. When the clock is turned back in the fall months, Hawaii is 5 hours behind EST and 2 hours behind PST.
Drink a lot of water and avoid caffeinated beverages.
Keep your body moving. Even while sitting on the airplane, doing simple isometric exercises for your feet, ankles, legs, arms and neck can reduce stress. If your flight involves stops, walk briskly down the airport corridors. While waiting for your connection, remember the old adage: don't sit when you can stand, don't stand when you can walk.
