Bon Dance: at Koloa Jodo Mission

Bon Dance at Koloa Mission in Kauai
There are several traditional dances in Japan, but one of the most famous and common dances is Bon Dance, or “Bon Odori” in Japanese.
This dance is done in the Bon Festival, which is held every summer, in every district on Kauai.
Bon means welcoming ancestors and holding a memorial service for their souls.
During Bon, families and relatives gather in a reminiscent mood as they hold a memorial service for their ancestors.
People gather at the open-space or the parks nearby, and dance to traditional Japanese music.

The appropriate way to welcome the ancestors’ souls is to play happy music at the dance.
It is the duty of the people to create this feeling of happiness. Japanese people believe that ancestors’ souls come back in the night, therefore, Bon Dance should be held at night.
People are allowed to join in the dancing. There is also onolicious food, drinks and baked goods.
The event is held at the Koloa Jodo Mission near Poipu Beach.
